⚡ Career Brake Guide · TechArtha Dimension

The career didn't stop.
You hit the brake.
Now what?

A layoff, a forced exit, a restructuring — whatever it's called, the result is the same. You have more time than money, more uncertainty than answers, and more at stake than you can comfortably admit to most people.

The difference between someone who bounces back in 60 days and someone who takes 18 months is not talent, luck, or connections. It is preparation — and whether they asked the right questions before Friday arrived.

⚡ If You Got The Call Today — What Happens Monday?
📞
Friday — You get the call
HR conversation. Notice period starts. Severance discussed. Most people go blank. The prepared have a checklist.
📋
Friday evening — Ask these before leaving
Negotiate notice period extension. Confirm gratuity calculation. Get relieving letter timeline in writing. Request LinkedIn recommendation now — not later.
🏦
Saturday — Financial triage
Calculate exact monthly burn. List every liquid asset. Check EMI pause eligibility. Do not touch mutual funds yet — there is a sequence.
🚀
Monday — Move immediately
Check Your Emergency Fund Balance. Check PF Accumulated. Update LinkedIn to Open to Work (recruiters only). Message 3 warm contacts — not asking, just reconnecting.
🎯
Week 1 — The plan takes shape
Target 5 roles per week — quality over volume. Set a 90-day milestone. Get your story right. The gap narrative matters more than the gap itself.

🗺️ The Recovery Plan

The 6-Phase Career Brake
Recovery Framework

Every career brake has six phases. Understanding which phase you're in — and what the right priority is for that phase — is the first act of control in a situation that feels uncontrollable.

Click any phase to see exactly what to do — actions, mindset, and the most common mistakes people make at that stage.

1
Absorb & Stabilise
Days 1–7
  • File PF withdrawal on EPFO portal
  • Call bank — request EMI moratorium
  • Get relieving letter date in writing
  • Tell exactly 3 trusted people — privately
  • Do not make any major decisions this week
2
Financial Triage
Days 7–14
  • Complete the Runway Calculator above
  • List every asset and its liquidity timeline
  • Cut non-essential spend ruthlessly — not permanently
  • Benchmark your next salary target — not your last
3
Positioning Sprint
Weeks 2–4
  • LinkedIn profile audit and rewrite
  • Resume updated for target role (not previous role)
  • Identify 5 target companies — not 50
  • Craft your gap narrative — one honest sentence
4
Active Search
Weeks 4–10
  • 5 targeted applications per week — quality not volume
  • 1 warm network conversation per week
  • 1 LinkedIn post per week — visibility without asking
  • Track pipeline: applied → interviewed → offered
5
Pivot or Bridge Decision
Week 8+ (if needed)
  • If no strong offers at 60 days — re-evaluate the approach
  • Freelance bridge: 1–2 clients extend runway and confidence
  • Pivot test: 30 days testing a new direction without burning runway
  • Do not take a role out of desperation — the cost is 2 years
6
Negotiate & Land Well
When the offer arrives
  • Never accept on the day — always ask for 48 hours
  • Negotiate salary, notice period, role clarity, WFH, ESOP
  • Get everything in writing before resigning elsewhere
  • Rebuild emergency fund as Priority 1 in new role
📅 Days 1–7
Phase 1 — Absorb & Stabilise
The first week is not a career week — it is a stabilisation week. The one mistake most professionals make: starting the job search on Day 1. The right first action is to secure your financial and legal position before touching your LinkedIn or your resume.
🏦
File PF claim TODAY (Day 1)Log in to the EPFO Member Portal with your UAN. Submit Form 19 for PF withdrawal. Processing takes 10–20 days. Most people wait 3 months and lose ₹30,000+ in opportunity cost.
💳
Call your bank this weekRequest a 3-month EMI moratorium. Most banks allow this without a formal application. It costs interest but preserves cash. Ask specifically for "EMI restructuring."
📄
Get your paperwork in writingRelieving letter date. Final settlement timeline. Gratuity calculation. Non-compete scope (if any). Get these confirmed by email before your notice period ends.
The right mindset this week: This is information, not verdict. The best careers have career brakes. What distinguishes people is not whether the brake happened — it is what they do in the first 7 days.

✅ The Day-1 Financial Checklist

These 8 actions in the first 48 hours determine whether you are managing this — or being managed by it. Tick each one as you complete it.

File PF withdrawal on EPFO portal (UAN required) 🔴 Day 1Go to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in → Claim → Form 19 (PF) + Form 10C (pension). Takes 5 minutes. Processing: 10–20 days. Average amount: ₹50,000–3,00,000.
Calculate gratuity amount and timeline 🔴 Day 1Formula: (Last salary × years of service × 15) ÷ 26. Payable within 30 days of relieving. Taxable above ₹20L. Confirm amount in writing from HR today.
Call bank and request EMI pause / restructuring 🟡 Week 1All major banks offer 3-month moratorium for job loss situations. It adds interest but preserves cash. Call your loan helpline — not the branch — for fastest processing.
Get relieving letter date confirmed in writing 🟡 Week 1Send an email to HR asking for confirmation of: relieving date, full and final settlement date, gratuity payout date, and experience letter. This paper trail protects you.
Request LinkedIn recommendations from your manager and 2 colleagues 🟠 Week 1Much easier to get while relationships are warm. Much harder 3 months later. Ask specifically for: "A recommendation mentioning [skill] and [impact]." Give them a draft if needed.
Update LinkedIn to "Open to Work" (recruiter-only mode) 🟠 Week 1Settings → Open to Work → Recruiters Only (green frame does NOT appear publicly). This puts you in recruiter search results immediately. Add target roles, locations, and availability.
Calculate exact monthly burn rate 🟢 Week 1–2List: EMIs, rent, groceries, utilities, fuel, insurance premiums. This number — and your runway — is the most important number in your life right now. Know it exactly.
Notify health insurance and maintain coverage 🟢 Week 2Corporate health insurance ends with employment. Immediately get an individual plan — do NOT go uninsured, even for one month. Buy a ₹5L base + ₹20L super top-up. Costs ~₹8,000–15,000/year.

🔍 LinkedIn Profile Audit — For Career Brake Mode

Tick each element you've completed. Your score tells you where recruiters are bouncing off your profile. Optimised profiles receive 3× more recruiter outreach during active searches.

Headline targets the NEXT role, not the last oneNot "Former Senior Manager at XYZ" — instead: "Senior Product Manager | B2B SaaS | Open to New Opportunities"
Open to Work enabled (Recruiter-Only mode)Settings → Jobs → Open to Work → Recruiters Only. No green frame, but you appear in recruiter searches immediately.
About section tells a story, not a job description3–4 sentences: Who you are, what you do best, what you're looking for. Written in first person. Ends with a clear next-step invitation.
Each role has 3 bullet points with measurable impact"Managed a team" → "Led 12-person team that delivered ₹4.2Cr revenue uplift in Q2 FY24." Numbers beat adjectives every time.
Skills section has 10+ relevant skills (keyword matching)Recruiters search by skill. If a skill is in the job description, it should be in your profile. Add all applicable skills and ask connections to endorse top 3.
At least 3 recommendations from managers or peersAsk specifically: "Could you write 3 sentences about [specific project] and [specific skill]?" Give them a starting point — busy people need a scaffold.
Profile photo is professional, recent, and clearProfessional does not mean formal. It means you look like someone a hiring manager would be happy to introduce to a client. Natural smile. Simple background. Recent (within 2 years).
Active on LinkedIn in the last 30 daysOne post or meaningful comment per week. Recruiters check activity recency. An inactive profile signals disengagement even when you're Open to Work.

🔄 Pivot or Return? The Decision Framework

5 questions. 2 minutes. A clearer direction on the most consequential choice of a career brake — whether to go back to what you know, or use this moment to change direction.

1. Before the layoff, how satisfied were you with your career direction — on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 5 (completely)?
2. How confident are you that your previous field has strong hiring demand over the next 2 years?
3. Have you been thinking about a different career direction for more than 6 months?
4. How much of your skill set is transferable to a different field or function?
5. How many months of financial runway do you have (from the calculator above)?

These tools give you direction.
